![]() In the last 20 years of his life, Longfellow continued to enjoy fame with honors bestowed on him in Europe and America. One of the early practitioners of self-marketing, Longfellow expanded his audience becoming one of the best-selling authors in the world. He wrote about a multitude of subjects: slavery in Poems on Slavery, literature of Europe in an anthology The Poets and Poetry of Europe, and American Indians in The Song of Hiawatha. Longfellow’s popularity seemed to grow, as did his collection of works. Due to budget cuts, he covered many of the teaching positions himself. Other publications followed such as Ballads and Other Poems, containing “The Wreck of the Hesperus” and the “Village Blacksmith.” During this time, Longfellow also taught full time at Harvard and directed the Modern Languages Department. Longfellow would produce some of his best work such as Voices of the Night, a collection of poems including Hymn to the Night and A Psalm of Life, which gained him immediate popularity. His work earned him a professorship at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In addition to teaching, he published his first book Outre-Mer: A Pilgrimage Beyond the Sea, a collection of travel essays on his European experience. Upon returning from Europe, because the study of foreign languages was so new in America, Longfellow had to write his own textbooks. There he developed a lifelong love of the Old World civilizations. Upon graduation, in 1825, he was offered a position to teach modern languages at Bowdoin, but on the condition that he first travel to Europe, at his own expense, to research the languages. Longfellow was an excellent student, showing proficiency in foreign languages. Among his fellow students was the writer, Nathaniel Hawthorne. ![]() Young Henry attended Portland Academy, a private school and then Bowdoin College, in Maine. His father, a prominent lawyer, expected his son would follow in his profession. Longfellow was born on February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine, to an established New England family. He was also known for his translation of Dante’s The Divine Comedy. He was heavily influenced by Romanticism and made a name as a poet and novelist with works like Hyperion, Evangeline, Poems on Slavery and The Song of Hiawatha. Recognizing that my competence comes from God, that the Holy Spirit has enabled me and “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” Philippians 4:13. Boasting, getting or receiving recommendations or praise are not the important factors. ![]() It’s here that I am learning that it’s not about my abilities, talents or skills. To become ministers of this new covenant I have to surround myself with God the Father, Jesus our Lord, and the Holy Spirit and to do this by reading the word of God. Jetola Anderson suggested surrounding oneself with positive people, uplifting literature and I wholeheartedly agree. The assumptions that others make about my abilities, the erroneous presumptions by others are also traps that take me away from the real mission. There are times when I do feel confident, valued and competent but what I am learning is that relying on my own skills and talents will only take me so far. I read a chapter in a book by Jetola Anderson entitled Presumed Incompetent in which she depicted a black woman wearing a suit getting on a plane who was assumed by some as being the flight attendant.Īs a woman and African-American I too have had a large share of other’s assumptions and presumed incompetence. These negative thoughts and feelings are heightened by the belief systems of others. ![]() From this original posting and even up to now, I sometimes feel quite the opposite of competent, very immature and lacking confidence. One of the many messages that I have received from study of scripture is that as we grow into mature Christians we become as Paul states “ministers of a new covenant”, made competent by God. He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant – not of the letter but of the Spirit for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God. Such confidence as this is ours through Christ before God. There are additional details about ACLs, and how to enable them in old versions of OS X, here.īased on a Masterclass which was originally published in MacUser volume 25 issue 4, 2009. Try creating a folder and file inside it, and check their permissions. There is no equivalent of the Effective Permissions tab in TinkerTool System, so select the folder in the Finder, and inspect it in the Get Info dialog (Cmd-I), to ensure that the everyone group is listed as having Custom privileges. Select the Inheritance tab, and ensure that you check at least Inherit to files, Inherit to directories, and Only inherit. In the top pop-up menus, select Allow (left) everyone (right), and in the General tab below select at least Read attributes, Write attributes, Add a file, and Add a subdirectory.Ģ. Click on the + tool to add ACLs, which drops a sheet down to allow you to set them. Then select the Access tab in the right pane. Select the File Browser tool, and navigate until the folder you wish to change is selected in the left pane. Try creating a folder and file inside it, and check their permissions.ġ. Next select the folder in the Finder, and inspect it in the Get Info dialog (Cmd-I), to ensure that the everyone group is listed as having Custom privileges. Select users and groups to view details of every nuance in their permissions. Switch to the Effective Permissions tab, and set it to view the file or folder that you have just been working on. Then click the Close button, and then Apply the changed ACLs.ģ. In this case, as a minimum, set the folder to Read Attributes, Create Files, Create Folder, Write Attributes, and in Inheritance Apply to subfolder, to enclosed files, and to all subfolder levels. This provides almost infinite variations in access and control that could become bewildering. You can now customise ACLs that define actions that are allowed, and those that are denied, for each user and group. Double-click the row entry for Everyone which you have just added to the ACL section of the pane to view the complete listing of the settings. Locate (using the Search box if necessary) the Everyone group, which should have an ID of 12.Ģ. Click on the + tool to add permissions, then select the Groups tab. Select the ACL Permissions tool, then drag and drop a folder, such as one in your Shared Folder, to the top selector, or click on the … tool to choose one. The two tools or choice are TinkerTool System or MacPilot.ġ. Here you can use ACLs to provide an overriding setting which will allow all users to edit the documents created in the Shared folder, and will ensure that is inherited by all folders and files created within it. If you want to share files and folders placed there, this can force you to manually change their permissions so that others can edit them too. For example, documents and folders which you create in the Shared folder (/Users/Shared) default to the same permissions as those which you create in your own Documents folder: that is, you (the owner) have read and write access, but others can only read. One occasionally irritating problem which ACLs can solve is with inheritance of permissions. But used in moderation they can solve many problems posed by crude POSIX permissions. Indeed, the control that they provide is so fine that, when overdone, they can make permission controls incomprehensibly complex. Permissions then govern which categories of users can read and write objects.Īccess Control Lists (ACLs), introduced in Mac OS X 10.4 and enabled by default in 10.5, give you complete control over exactly who can do what to files and folders, even details such as their own inheritance in objects created within a given folder. ![]() As far as it goes, every user is categorised as being the owner of an item, a member of the group that owns it, or just another user. The normal POSIX system of permissions, as shown in the Finder’s Get Info dialog for files and folders, is an effective foundation for security, but is very crude. |
